Program Overview
The HealthCareerU Emergency Medical Technician Challenge Exam program is designed to provide an opportunity for experienced healthcare professionals to bypass the standard EMT course curriculum. This program allows eligible individuals to demonstrate proficiency in both cognitive (written) and psychomotor (skills) competencies required of an EMT.
This program is established in compliance with the California Code of Regulations, Title 22, Division 9, Chapter 3.1, § 100067.143.
Program Highlights
Streamlined Path for Licensed Professionals
Our program is specifically tailored for individuals with extensive prior medical training and experience, allowing you to challenge the course based on your proven competency.
Eligibility Highlights:
- You are a currently U.S.-licensed Physician, Registered Nurse, Physician Assistant, Vocational Nurse, or Practical Nurse
- OR, you have successfully completed an emergency medical service training program of the Armed Forces within the preceding two (2) years or were active in a prehospital emergency medical classification in the last two (2) years
- Must hold a current CPR certification (AHA BLS or equivalent)
- You must be at least 18 years of age
High-Stakes, High-Standard Assessment
The EMTU Challenge Exam emphasizes mastery. Candidates must pass each assessment (cognitive and psychomotor) on the first attempt. Failure on any component on the first attempt is grounds for immediate failure of the Challenge Exam and candidates will not be allowed any retakes.

1. Application Process
Candidates must submit the following to the Program Director to confirm eligibility:
- A written request for challenge exam consideration
- All required documentation of prior training or experience, including official transcripts and certificates
- Payment of the non-refundable Challenge Exam Fee
- The signed Challenge Candidate Acknowledgment Form
Once eligibility is confirmed, you will be scheduled for the required cognitive and skills assessments.
2. Cognitive Exam (Written Test)
- Format: 100 multiple-choice questions
- Time Limit: 2.5 hours
- Passing Score: 80%
- Content Areas: Preparatory & EMS Systems; Airway, Respiration & Ventilation; Patient Assessment; Medical and Trauma Emergencies; OB/GYN, Pediatrics, Special Populations; and EMS Operations & Legal/Ethical Issues
3. Psychomotor Exam (Skills Test)
Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in all required NREMT and EMSA psychomotor skill stations. Each skill must be passed according to NREMT rubric standards.

Benefits & Outcome
Upon successfully passing both the written and skills components (each on the first attempt), HealthCareerU will issue a Certificate of Challenge Completion.
This certificate makes you eligible to apply for NREMT testing and subsequent California EMT certification (once you have passed the NREMT exam).
